What it Means to be Coachable and Empty Your Cup…

Have you ever heard the saying “empty your cup” …?

I first learnt this saying back last year while I was completing an online coaching program on starting and running a successful online business…

During which, the coaching program referred to Bruce Lee’s version of a well-known fable of a martial artist who goes to study under the arm of an expert Zen master.

Personally, myself I don’t know a lot about martial arts but the story goes like this…

A learned man once went to a Zen teacher to ask about Zen…

As the Zen teacher explained, the learned man would frequently interrupt him with remarks like, “Oh, yes, we have that too….” and so on…

Finally, the Zen teacher stopped talking and began to serve tea to the learned man…

He poured the cup full, and then kept pouring until the cup overflowed…

“Enough!”

… the learned man once more interrupted…

“No more can go into the cup!”
“Indeed, I see,”…

… answered the Zen teacher…

“If you do not first empty the cup, how can you taste my cup of tea?”

Throughout life, we look to our role models, instructors, mentors and coaches to show us new ideas, new techniques, and new values that will enrich our way of life…

Why else would you go to these people?

This way of thinking about learning is called the “beginner’s mind”.

A famous Zen teacher explained it best…

In the beginner’s mind there is no thought, “I have attained something.”

All self-centred thoughts limit our vast mind. When we have no thought of achievement, no thought of self, we are true beginners.

Then we can truly learn something.

So, I want to ask you, if you are truly serious about achieving your goals, dreams and desires and changing your life forever.

I want to ask you to commit to the journey…

To be coachable…

To empty your cup…

And, approach the journey with a “beginners mind”, clearing away the necessary space by setting aside all judgment…

If you catch yourself saying “Oh, I know this already.”

Or “Yeah, I’ve heard this all before.”

Try and recognise that thought for what it is…

Your cup is full…

Take a deep breath and ask yourself this question…

What is more important to me…

Being right or being happy?

Being right or being fulfilled?

Being right or creating the life I want to live ?
