Are You Putting Off What You Enjoy?

When you decide that you're going to become an entrepreneur and work for yourself, you instantly put a tremendous amount of pressure on yourself. You're taking the road less travelled, and you're telling the world that. And if you let it, this pressure is going to cause you to burn out and stop enjoying your life.

How do I know?

Because this is something that happened to me very recently. I was sat at home listening to countless people telling me I had to hustle 24/7, that I shouldn’t take time off for myself. I should always be doing something more for my goals. And in theory, that’s probably what I should have been doing, what everyone should do.

The only problem is we’re all human, and while a robot can hustle 24/7 we cannot. When you hear this you too might think you should be working constantly because that’s what everyone else is doing. But I think deep down you probably know that’s not sustainable or feasible. I knew it, but I got suckered in any way.

This is how my days would look: Work. Gym. Work. Sleep. Every time I got invited out I wouldn’t go, I packed up my PS4 and kept it out of sight. I stopped reading any fiction books and opted for books that had useable knowledge I could learn from.

And by doing this you’re going to get a lot of work done. BUT you’re not going to be happy. And then what’s the point?

If you’re doing this telling yourself you’ll be happy when just get something done, you’re going to lead a miserable life. Because there’s always going to be something afterwards you JUST need to finish.

Okay, so you don’t care about your happiness?

Even if you don’t care about your happiness, it doesn’t matter. You need balance in your life. One way or another you’re going to get it. If you try to work constantly every day your mind will frazzle, and I promise you, you will burn out eventually.

And the time you’ve spent burnt out is going to be a lot longer than if you had just taken a little time out to enjoy yourself. You’re going to get stuck in a huge rut. Just thinking about work will make your mind go numb and you will become ridiculously unproductive.

I was looking for anything to avoid doing the work I needed to do. I started going out constantly to catch up on all the fun I’d missed out on the last couple of months. If I wasn’t going out I was playing video games. I was literally doing ANYTHING to avoid doing the work that I used to love doing.

What If You’ve Already Burnt Out?

If you’re reading this and you’ve already burnt out you’re probably wondering how you can get out of this rut you’re in. And I can tell you what worked for me. When I snapped, I went from 100% work to 100% fun.

The trick for me was to slowly switch the percentages back.

Go to 95% fun and 5% work. Then 90% fun and 10% work. Until you’re at a comfortable level. For me personally, 70% work and 30% fun is where I find I get a good mix of relaxing and building. But it could be different for you.

JUST LISTEN TO YOUR BODY. I know it’s hard when you really want to get something done and you’re just pushing through, and every once in a while it’s okay to do this. But when you’re doing too much and trying to get more done than necessary, just take a break.

Go get some sun on your face, sit at home and play video games, go and have a mad night out. Whatever it is that you enjoy doing, just go and do it. You may feel like you’re wasting time, but believe me, you’re going to waste a lot more time if you don’t do it.

And For The Future…

Learn to set yourself reasonable goals. When you’re motivated you want to set yourself an impossible goal. A goal that you know you can achieve if you constantly work and you think you will constantly work. But once that inspiration dies, you’re left with a big goal and no fuel to fulfil it. So set goals you know you can achieve not just when you’re inspired, but when you’re relying on your discipline to push you. And don’t worry if it takes a little longer than you’d like. Because you’re going to enjoy the journey a lot more.

And one other thing. If you are going to set goals. Make sure you set this goal: “To spend time enjoying myself today”. Once you’ve got the work done make sure you take some time out to relax in whatever way you see fit. Otherwise, you’ll begin to see your whole life pass by, while you’re sat by yourself. The irony is you already have the happiness you’re seeking in the future, you just need to stop for a moment and enjoy it.

So Remember…

Work hard, set yourself goals that are reasonable and MOST importantly: set the goal to take some time out of your day every day, just to enjoy yourself however you see fit.

Thanks for reading, and have a great day.
