Negativity is all around us. Fact. But that doesn’t mean we have to listen to it, indulge in it, or be negative ourselves. And, if we think about it for a minute, where does negativity get us? Where has it ever gotten anyone? I’ll tell you where… nowhere because positivity always wins.
Of course, that is all well and said because it’s easier to say than it is to do. So, the question is, how can we be more positive, and less negative in all aspects of our lives?
Like most things in life, there is more than one way to overcome and drown out negativity. Before I share some of the ways I recommend (especially in the beginning) it’s important to understand that negativity is always going to exist and in more ways than one. The key here is to drown it out, to turn it down by deciding to raise your positivity levels.
At the end of the day, we all have a choice. We can choose to be negative, or we can choose to be positive. We can choose to complain and moan or we can choose to learn something and grow.
And, I think that is a common misconception with positivity. People, often think positivity is where you’re jumping around with your hands in the air (or something similar) when actually most of the time it’s simply a state of mind.
Of course, that state of mine has an impact on your body language and persona. But, it doesn’t mean you’re always jumping around with optimism, happiness, and enthusiasm. It also means, when different situations come up in our lives, not complaining or moaning about them but having a positive mental attitude to learn something and grow.
One of the main ways I recommend to drown out negativity is by working together…
What do I mean by this?
Simply put, it’s harder to be positive if you’re in a negative environment. Period! It takes mental strength, courage, and a certain type of character – which we can all develop in the first instances anyway so when you pile that on top of a negative environment, the chances of developing a strong positive mental attitude or just being positive are decreased.
Now, that’s just my opinion. But, there are resources such as books that I have read that back this up. And, of course, the famous saying of you become the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with also backs up my point.
If you have 5 negative friends, who you hang out with nearly every day then, well, good luck to ya!
So, it’s crucially important that we find communities and people who believe in the ethos that positivity always wins, and make the commitment to being more positive.
By working with such people you’re also kept more accountable because let’s face it, you’re not going to feel positive or upbeat every day. Sometimes we just need that extra motivator and reminder from such people of who you are, where you’re going and what you’re working towards because it’s easy to get into a negative downhill spiral where one negative thought leads to another which leads to another which leads to another… (you get the point)
Ultimately, it’s about auditing your circle so you spend more time with positive, upbeat, uplifting people who raise you higher rather than hold you back.
The challenge is that it’s pretty easy to find negativity. It’s pretty easy to find negative people. And, a little more challenging to find positive people.
That’s why in 2016 I decided to audit my circle and I developed the outlook that it’s better to be on my own rather than spend my time with people who don’t understand me, hold me back and complain, moan and complain and moan all the time rather than doing something about it. It got me down, and I got to the point where I had enough.
Developing that type of mindset is hard for the majority. Just like it was for me. But, it leads me to connect with the most amazing people from around the world, who I feel like I’ve known for a lifetime.
The key thing from my experience is that no one should be afraid to make a similar decision to what I made. The reality is that most people are. And, they are afraid because they don’t want to be on their own. They don’t value themselves enough and would rather be around people who are negative and hold them back than to distance themselves with these negative folks.
I am going a little off-topic, slightly. But, it’s all relevant as I want my experience to help you to find people who are going to raise you higher and a part of that process is to let go of the people holding you back.
The overriding message here is by working together with positive, uplifting like-minded people we can drown negativity out. We can start to live a more, vibrant, positive, and upbeat life where we are focusing on accomplishing our goals and dreams instead of all of the negativity around us.
And, when we combine this with what I like to call my positivity hack we can really start to drown the haters and negativity away or turn it down so quietly we don’t even know it there.
Moving onto my positivity hack…
My positivity hack is pretty simple. Although that doesn’t mean it’s easy. Alongside sharing this with you I also challenge you to start to implement it into your daily life.
As you go about your day-to-day, and negative things appear (whatever it may be) I want you to come up with 3 positive things either about the moment you’re in or about your life in general. I want to you identify them, make a mental note, or write them down. Keep track, and reflect to notice any trends.
And, the same thing applies, if and when you see negativity elsewhere. For example: let’s say you’re scrolling through social media and see a negative social media post – it’s quite likely. It’s your job to comment or share something positive. A different positive perspective, that may (and often does) help others and spreads more positivity.
The most difficult thing about this hack is implementing it over and over again so it becomes a habit and also knowing what to share that is positive. I don’t want you to waste your time and overthink it. The key from this hack is whenever you notice ONE negative thing, whatever it is, is to search and find THREE positive things, express them, and then take note.
I often remember it as a 1:3 ratio. One negative thing = three positive things.
And, as I said before when you combine this with working together with other like-minded positive people, you will drown out negativity. Sorry, WE WILL drown out negativity.
Think about it… it’s a compounding effect. Imagine if everyone who noticed one negative thing, did three positive things to counteract the one negative thing…
The world would be a much better place that’s for sure!

It’s over to you to implement the two recommendations I have shared in this post. And, while there are more things, more habits, actions, and hacks you can use to drown out negativity, I believe the two I shared with you today are the two that can make the bigger difference to you right now.
